Abstract
This article explores the need for a new discourse capable of adequately articulating the position and implications of Korean literature—a body of work expressed in a non-mainstream language that constantly oscillates between local specificity and global universality. Focusing on the current state of Korea’s literature globalization project, which began with efforts to introduce Korean literature abroad, this study critically reflects on underlying assumptions that have often been overlooked in the rush to implement policy—such as the implications of setting ‘globalization’ as a concrete goal, the orientations embedded in related policies, and the evolving status of Korean literature itself. Eventually, by examining the international introduction of Korean literature through the lens of the publicness of publishing in translation, this article seeked to establish a critical foundation for rethinking the meaning of literature—beyond the frameworks of recognition and competition—in an era of global decentralization.
