Abstract
This paper examines H.M.S. Victory as a key site of memory of both the Royal Navy and Britain more broadly, tracing how various forms of memory surrounding the ship have evolved from its launch to the present day. Despite the iconic status of Nelson and H.M.S. Victory, there has been little historical scholarship on them within Korean academia, and even internationally, existing studies on H.M.S. Victory tend to focus either on its general operational history or on the 1920s restoration project, rarely engaging with the evolving layers of memory and meaning the ship has accumulated over time. In particular, the period between the Battle of Trafalgar and the major restoration in the 1920s has received scant attention, as has the question of how H.M.S. Victory has been interpreted and commemorated in Britain from the restoration era to the present. This study thus offers a diachronic analysis of H.M.S. Victory’s career and successive preservation efforts, with the aim of understanding how the ship has functioned as a site of memory across different historical moments.
