‘-어도 되다’의 양태 의미와 허가 화행, 그리고 공손성의 관계에 대하여

이 글은 ‘-어도 되다’의 양태 의미를 분석하고, 이 양태 의미가 허가 화행과 공손성 전략에 어떻게 쓰이는지를 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. ‘-어도 되다’는 ‘허가’의 의무 양태 표현으로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 ‘허가’의 의무 양태로 규정해 놓고서는 양태와 정합적일 수 없고 형용사나 계사와 결합하는 ‘-어도 되다’의 분포를 설명할 수가 없다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여 의무 양태와 미래성 사이에 내적인 연관성이 존재한다는 주장에 주목하였다. 그래서 어떤 명제에 대하여 그것이 미래의 일을 참이 되게 하는 예외적인 조건임을 ‘-어도 되다’의 양태 표현을 통해 언어화할 수 있다고 보았다. 이런 ‘-어도 되다’의 양태 의미는 허가 화행의 시나리오에서 이전 부문에 기록되어 있다. 대화 참여자들 간에 양태적 판단 능력의 있고 없음은 대화를 진행하게 하는 동기가 된다. 그리고 ‘-어도 되다’의 양태 의미가 허가 화행의 시나리오를 구성하는 일부일 뿐이지만 ‘-어도 되다’의 표현으로 허가 화행을 나타낼 수가 있다. 이는 화・청자의 환유 작용으로 가능하다. 마지막으로 허가 화행의 시나리오를 보면 청자는 A를 하고자 하나 양태적 판단 능력이 없는 [-MK] 상태라서 행동이 부자유스럽다. 이는 청자의 체면이 손상된 원인이다. 이에 대해 [+MK]의 화자는 ‘-어도 되다’를 사용하여 청자가 알지 못한 양태 정보를 알려줌으로써 청자가 원하는 행동을 할 수 있도록 만들 수 있고, 이는 곧 청자의 체면을 보호하게 된다. 또한 ‘-어도 되다’가 갖는 예외 조건은 청자가 선택할 수 있는 기회를 더 줄 수가 있어서 청자의 체면을 보호할 수 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to deal with how the modal meaning of -eodo doida is used to permissive speech act and politeness. The deontic modal meaning known as permission is not coherent with modality. In addition, -eodo doida combined with adjective or copula is not able to mean permission. -eodo doida verbalizes the exceptional condition for which De2 realizes Fe. Permission is a kind of speech act. Even though the modality has no illocutionary force, it can be the pragmatic condition for a particular speech act. The modal meaning of -eodo doida is a part of the scenario of permissive speech act. The difference of the modal judging ability between participants produces the power of conversation. The modal -eodo doida can function as permissive speech act with the metonymy. The hearer has been already in restricted before performing permissive speech act. The speaker using -eodo doida can solve the hearer’s problem and protect the hearer’s negative face. What the modal meaning of -eodo doida can give more alternatives to the hearer rather than -eoya or -myeon can be another strategy of politeness to the hearer.
