Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to find the original names of the words ‘다람쥐’(squirrel), ‘두더쥐’(mole), and ‘청설모’(squirrel with blue hairs). There is a common thing among these three animals that they are related with ‘쥐’(rats), even though all of them are not for ‘쥣과’(animal of the rat genus). The ‘다람쥐’ was ‘쥐’ in the 18th century documents, the ‘두더지’ was ‘두디쥐’ in the 15th century documents, and the ‘청설모’ was ‘靑鼠'(blue rat) in the 15th century documents. The native Korean name for ‘청설모’ could not be found in any literature. For the ‘쥐’ and the ‘두디쥐,’ the way of tracing each word's appearing time, coinage structure, and process of change all together was used to see whether the existing studies are good for finding the original names. And some other words which represent the ‘다람쥐’ and the ‘두더지’ were discussed. The word form ‘쥐,' which followed ‘라미,’ appeared first in the Modern Korean literature. The word ‘쥐' is combined with ‘(-+-)’ and ‘쥐.’ The word ‘솔쥐’ was discussed because of its possible representing ‘다람쥐.’ The ‘솔쥐’ is the native name for ‘松鼠’(pine tree rat) in Chinese letter. The word ‘두디쥐’ comes from combining ‘두디-’, a verb root with ‘쥐’(rat), a noun, and then it changed into ‘두지쥐’ because of its palatalization, and it disappeared. The ‘두디쥐’ beame ‘두더쥐’ because of its own lexical change. It was possible to find a new word ‘뒤덕이’ meaning ‘두더지,’ and it is a noun form coming from the verb ‘뒤져기-’. The ‘청설모’ was discussed with regarding to its appearing time, word form structure, and the process of word form and meaning changes. In addition, the native noun representing ‘청설모’ was traced. The ‘쳥셜모’ appeared first time in the 19th century literature and it seems to add ‘ㄹ’ to ‘쳥셔모(靑鼠毛)(blue hair of rat)’ in Chinese letter, and it represents ‘청설모의 털’(hair of red squirrel) originally. And then it became to refer to ‘청설모’, the animal. The meaning change occurred before the 19th century. And ‘靑鼠’(blue rat) in Chinese letter was named based on the blue grey color of ‘청설모’, the animal. Although there could not be found any native names for ‘청설모’, the word ‘솔쥐’, which represent ‘다람쥐’, could sometimes be used for ‘청설모’. Or the word ‘솔쥐’ refers to ‘다람쥐’ and ‘청설모’ which usually live in pine trees.
