의무 양태의 몇 가지 문제에 대하여

명제나 사태의 사실성 위상을 지시하기 위한 언어 범주가 양태다. 미결정 상태의 명제는 현실의 시·공간을 배경으로 하여 사태를 서술할 수 없어서 화자가 자신의 태도나 판단으로 그 사태를 가능세계나 정신공간 속에서 한정하게 되는데, 이 일을 양태가 담당한다. 그리고 양태가 표현할 수 있는 명제의 양상은 가능성과 필연성으로 한정된다. ‘행위 부과’와 ‘행위에 영향을 미침’은 가장 잘 알려진 의무 양태의 핵심 개념이었으나 몇 가지 문제를 갖는다. 우선 명제에 대한 화자의 태도라는 전통적인 양태 개념과 정합되지 않는다. 또 의무 양태가 한정하는 명제 내용을 ‘행위’로 특정하여서 형용사나 계사와 결합한 ‘-어야 하다’, ‘-어도 되다’의 문장을 의무 양태의 문장으로 볼 수 없게 된다. 이에 의무 양태와 미래성 사이에 내적인 연관성이 존재한다는 Lyons(1977)의 주장을 실마리 삼아 ‘De가 Fe를 실현시키기 위한 조건이 될 수 있는지, 만약 된다면 조건의 강도는 얼마나 되는지, 즉 가능성과 필연성에 대한 화자의 판단’을 의무 양태의 개념이라고 보았다. ‘행위 부과’와 ‘행위에 영향을 미침’은 의무 양태가 아니라 화행의 한 양상이다. Nuyts(2008)에 따르면, 의무 양태와 화행은 개념 체계와 행위 체계의 관계에 있다. 특히 의무 양태의 의미는 시나리오의 (i) 이전 부문의 내용에 포함되는데, ‘청자가 어떤 행동 A를 한 뒤의 결과를 청자는 모르지만 화자는 안다’가 의무 양태의 의미와 통한다. 그리고 ‘행위 부과’와 ‘행위에 영향을 미침’은 지시 화행으로 환원해 볼 수 있겠으나 이는 ‘-어야 하다’와 ‘-어도 되다’의 일부 화행일 뿐이다. 형용사와 계사가 결합한 ‘-어야 하다’와 ‘-어도 되다’는 지시 화행을 수행할 수 없고 대신 단언 화행을 수행한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reestablish the concept of deontic modality by analyzing critically the existing concept of deontic modality and to show that the concept of existing deontic modality is function of speech act, and then to check the relationship between modified deontic modality and speech act. Modality is a linguistic category referring to the factual status of a state of affairs, and modality is understood as subjectively qualifying the proposition to the possibility or necessity. ‘Affecting the act’ is known as the core concept of the deontic modality, but there are some problems. First of all, it is not consistent with the traditional concept of modality. Next, ‘-eoya hada’ and ‘-eodo doida’ combined with an adjective or a copular are not regarded as deontic modality. In order to solve this problem, Lyons (1977) was used as a clue to define the deontic modality as follows. The deontic modality is a language category that indicates the speaker's judgment of the possibility and necessity of condition. ‘Affecting the act’ is not deontic modality but an aspect of speech act. Deontic modality means ‘the hearer does not know the result of what (s)he did after (s)he did, but the speaker knows the result’ in the scenario (i). The deontic modality is related to the assertive act as well as to the directive act.
