Abstract

This study examines the structural and pragmatic features of formal email communication between international students and professors, focusing on discourse moves and request speech acts from the perspective of Korean discourse and text studies. A total of 151 emails written by international undergraduate students to their professors were collected between December 2024 and May 2025. The emails were analyzed in terms of communicative purpose, macro- and micro-structural organization, discourse move types, and request strategies. The analysis revealed that while the emails generally followed a conventional macrostructure—comprising subject line, introduction, body, and closing—the hierarchical nature of the professor–student relationship often resulted in indirectness and mitigation in request acts. Sensitive topics such as attendance and grades were more likely to be framed solely through supportive acts without explicit statement of the request. Furthermore, six discourse move types not identified in previous models—‘stating the purpose of the email,’ ‘making an inquiry,’ ‘making a promise,’ ‘expressing reflection,’ ‘respecting the recipient’s stance,’ and ‘leaving contact information’—were identified, thereby extending the scope of genre analysis for academic Korean email discourse. These findings provide a detailed account of how international students perform institutional discourse in Korean and offer practical implications for email literacy instruction and genre-based writing pedagogy in Korean language education.
