이 연구는 한국어의 ‘하다 하다’ 구문이 기원 형식인 ‘-다(가)’ 반복 구성의 ‘과정 누적’ 의미에서 분화하여, 화자의 주관적 태도를 드러내는 독자적인 양태 표현으로 문법화된 과정을 규명한다. ‘하다 하다’의 기원 형식인 ‘-다(가)’ 동일 용언 반복 구성이 주로 객관적인 과정의 누적을 서술하는 데 중점을 두는 반면, ‘하다 하다’ 구문은 상황의 극단에 대한 화자의 판단을 드러내는 평가 양태 표현으로서 화용적 기능을 수행한다. 이러한 기능 분화는 어휘화를 통해 고정된 단위로 굳어지고, 탈범주화를 거치며 통사적 자율성을 획득하며, 최종적으로 주관화를 통해 고유한 평가 양태 기능으로 특화되는 복합적인 문법화 과정을 통해 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서는 실제 말뭉치 분석을 통해 ‘하다 하다’의 평가 양태로서의 기능이 평이한 일상 대화보다는 화자의 주장과 평가가 중요한 논평적 담화 맥락에서 활발하게 나타남을 보였다. 이는 ‘하다 하다’가 단순 반복을 넘어, 담화 차원에서 화자의 입장을 표출하는 정교한 문법적 장치로 발전했음을 보여주는 구체적인 증거가 된다.
Abstract
This study elucidates the grammaticalization process of the Korean ‘hada hada’ construction, tracing its differentiation from its source form— the ‘-da(ga)’ repetitive construction signifying ‘process accumulation’—into a unique modal expression conveying the speaker’s subjective attitude. This functional differentiation is analyzed through three key aspects of its grammaticalization. The construction has lexicalized into a fixed, non-compositional idiom; it has decategorialized, shedding its subordinate clause status to gain syntactic autonomy as a discourse marker; and it has subjectified, specializing its function as an evaluative modal expression. Through corpus analysis, this study demonstrates that this evaluative modal function appears more actively in commentary discourse contexts, where the speaker’s views and evaluations are central, than in everyday conversation. This serves as concrete evidence that ‘hada hada’ has developed beyond simple repetition into a sophisticated grammatical device for expressing the speaker’s stance at the discourse level.
