초록

This study conducted a structural move analysis of 101 Korean request emails sent by Chinese graduate students to professors. Its aim was to analyze the genre characteristics of Korean request emails written by Chinese learners for academic purposes. Moreover, by comparing the emails to those written by native speakers, the study sought to pinpoint differences and suggest solutions for Chinese learners who are in need to write a request email to their professors. The study findings revealed that Korean request emails written by Chinese learners for academic purposes differed from those of native speakers in various aspects: the type of move, the usage pattern of move, the essentiality of each move type, and the frequency of each move type. Problems observed in the emails included the unnecessary use of certain move types, deviations from Korean language conventions in the usage pattern of move, and a much lower utilization of certain move types compared to native speakers. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on providing pre-education for Chinese learners of Korean for academic purposes on move in Korean request emails. Specifically, this education should involve explanations with examples, detailing the types of move used when writing a Korean request email to professors, for what purpose each move type is typically used, and the usage pattern of each move type.
