Abstract
In elementary moral education in Korea, along with normative ethics related to ‘What is morally right and good?’, we deal with meta-ethics (or ‘meta-morality’) related to ‘What is the essence of morality, and what are the characteristics of moral knowledge, claims, and actions?’ So what is the purpose of teaching meta-morality? In this article, I argued that if the purpose of moral education is moral development, and the construction of a more advanced understanding of moral knowledge is a necessary condition for moral development, then epistemic cognition, which means our knowledge of the truth and justification of belief, is worth considering as the purpose of moral education. And I suggested how the content and achievement standards of moral education related to meta-morality should be revised.
