Abstract
This study aimed to empirically examine what types of moral dilemmas arouse epistemic doubt in fourth-grade students(age 10), leading to a change toward advanced epistemic cognition. The results revealed that ① ‘moral exemplar’ did not contribute to arousing epistemic doubt, particularly doubt about epistemic objectivism. On the other hand, ② ‘unresolvable controversies’ and ‘resolvable controversies’ partially weakened students' epistemic objectivism by arousing their doubts(We call this the ‘passive’ aspect of epistemic change). However, neither of these factors led to ③ a developmental change toward advanced epistemic cognition, that is, a progress from objectivism to subjectivism and then to rationalism(the so-called ‘active’ aspect of epistemic change). Based on these results, we argued that ‘unresolvable controversies’ and ‘resolvable controversies’ can influence the ‘passive’ aspect of epistemic change, but does not significantly influence the ‘active’ aspect.
