비판적 사고교육의 도덕교육적 의의 및 적용방안

초록

도덕교육적 맥락에서 비판적 사고교육이 지니는 의미와 특성을 제대로 파악한다면 비판적 사고교육은 도덕교육의 목표를 달성하는데 보다 효과적으로 작용할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 이러한 의도에서 비판적 사고교육이 도덕교육에 어떤 의의가 있는지를 고찰한다. 비판적 사고개념을 지나치게 확대하는 것은 조심스럽지만, 오늘날 비판적 사고가 인지적 기능과 정서적 성향이 모두 관여된 개념이며, 분석과 평가뿐만 아니라 의사결정과 문제해결을 도모하는 사고활동이라는 점은 대체로 인정되고 있다. 비판적 사고가 지닌 자율적, 합리적, 반성적 속성은 비판적 사고가 도덕성과 밀접한 관련을 갖고 있음을 시사한다. 또한 비판적 사고를 촉진하는 것은 도덕성을 함양하는데 여러 가지 면에서 기여한다. 즉 비판적 사고는 타인을 존중, 배려하고, 주관적인 혹은 상대적인 관점을 피하도록 도우며, 기존의 도덕규범을 검토, 개선하도록 하며, 민주적인 삶의 태도를 함양시켜주고, 무엇보다도 도덕적 앎이 행함으로 이어지도록 도울 수 있다. 비판적 사고교육적 접근으로 효과적인 도덕교육을 실시하기 위해서는 질문법, 대화와 공동의 숙고, 실생활 문제중심학습, 습관화와 모델링 등을 적극적으로 활용할 수 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate what implications teaching critical thinking has in moral education. Most contemporary theorists admit that critical thinking consists of intellectual skills/abilities and emotional dispositions and that it involves the thinking processes of making a decision and solving a problem as well as those of analyzing and assessing statements. Critical thinking is closely related to morality in that it has the characteristics of autonomy, reasonableness and reflective skepticism. It serves to cultivate morality in several aspects: it helps students to stay out of their subjective perspectives, to respect others, to review and improve conventional moral rules, and to foster attitudes for democratic livings. It, also, can facilitate the transfer of moral knowledge into behavior. There are some approaches of teaching critical thinking which can be effectively used in moral education: questioning, dialogical thinking, deliberating together, problem based learning, habituation and modeling.
