Abstract

After the U.S. financial crisis in 2008, shadow banking as a new concept has attracted widespread attention in the academic community. Shadow banking refers to unregulated or less regulated institutions and businesses similar to traditional commercial banks. The continuous acceleration of China’s financial innovation and the contradiction between the supply and demand of financial resources are all prerequisites for the rapid development of shadow banking. In recent years, the scale of China’s shadow banking has continued to increase, and the types of business have gradually diversified, which has changed the flow of funds and the way of social financing. The shadow banking system has developed into a credit intermediary system that cannot be ignored in China’s economy. A report by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) in 2017 pointed out that the scale of shadow banking in China has ballooned to more than $7 trillion, accounting for 15 percent of the global shadow banking scale. The impact of shadow banking development in China is two-fold. On the one hand, shadow banking promotes financial innovation, improves the utilization rate of funds, and injects liquidity into the financial market. On the other hand, due to the lack of comprehensive supervision, opaque transaction information, and maturity mismatches, shadow banking will bring certain risks to the financial market and affect the monetary policy transmission mechanism, which is not conducive to the realization of the ultimate goal of monetary policy, thus affecting China economic and financial stability. In this context, studying the influence mechanism of shadow banking on China’s monetary policy will help to conduct targeted supervision and guidance of shadow banking, improve the effectiveness of monetary policy implementation, and improve the efficiency of monetary policy serving the real economy. After summarizing the related literature on shadow banking and monetary policy, this thesis analyzes and studies three aspects: current situation elaboration, theoretical analysis and empirical test. Firstly, the research background, significance and related literature are expounded; the second part studies the definition, composition and causes of shadow banking in China. The third part studies the impact of shadow banking on China’s monetary policy, from three perspectives of monetary policy intermediary indicators, transmission mechanism and ultimate goal. Then empirical research is carried out by constructing var model. The final results show that shadow banking reduces the measurability and controllability of monetary policy intermediary indicators and weakens the role of monetary policy credit transmission mechanism and interest rate transmission mechanism.
