철학상담과 심리치료의 관계: 아헨바흐의 견해를 중심으로

철학상담의 정체성은 그것과 유사한 목표를 갖고 있는 심리치료와의 관계에서 규명되어야 한다. 실제로 많은 철학상담 이론가들이나 실천가들이 심리치료와의 차별성을 강조하면서 철학상담의 정체성을 확립하려는 전략을 취하고 있으며 그 결과 철학상담의 정체성과 관련하여 다양한 이론들이 제안되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 이론적 다양성은 철학상담 분야의 이론적 성숙도를 보여준다는 점에서 청신호일 수 있지만 다른 한편으로는 쿤의 의미에서 철학상담 분야에 주도적 패러다임이 없다는 것은 그 분야가 정상과학의 단계에 진입하지 못했다는 것을 보여주는 적신호에 해당한다. 이 글의 목적은 철학상담과 심리치료의 차별성을 통하여 철학상담을 정의하려는 아헨바흐(Achenbach)의 전략을 평가하고 그와 관련된 사항들을 검토하는 것이다. 우선 아헨바흐가 제시한 철학상담 정체성과 방법을 검토하고 이어서 그것들에 대한 대표적인 비판들을 검토할 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 아헨바흐의 원래 의도가 상당한 정도로 오해되고 있다는 점을 지적하고 그럼에도 불구하고 아헨바흐의 견해는 철학상담이 궁극적으로는 연결될 수 밖에 없는 ‘임상적 측면’을 간과하는 한계를 안고 있다는 점을 지적할 것이다.
Abstract
The identity of philosophical counseling should be characterized in its relation to psychotherapy, for both have a common objective. Indeed, a lot of theoreticians and practitioners in the field of philosophical counseling have taken a strategy to emphasize the difference between philosophical practice and psychotherapy in order to secure the identity, and as a result we can see various theories about it. On the one hand, this multiplicity of theories can be regard as a good news in the sense that they demonstrate the theoretical maturity in the field of philosophical practice. On the other hand, it can be thought of as a bad news in the Kuhnian sense that no paradigm is a sign of its status of pre-science, not normal science. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate Gerd B. Achenbach's idea to define philosophical practice by using the its difference to psychotherapy. First I shall examine the characteristics and method of philosophical practice which Achenbach has argued, and then examine some objections to his idea. Second, I shall point out the fact that critics have misunderstood Achenbach's original idea, especially his notion of so-called beyond method's method. Third, I shall argue that Achenbach's idea has a serious limitation in the clinical aspect, to which his own notion of philosophical practice have to lead.
