이 글의 목적은 철학상담과 심리상담의 차이를 몇몇 현상적인 특징들에서 찾지 않고 본질적인 측면에서 따져보는 데 있다. 심리상담은 이미 확정된 것이고 철학상담은 새로 만들어지는 것이기 때문에 철학상담의 차별성에만 주목해온 종래의 입장에서 벗어나 심리상담 차체를 반성적으로 고찰해보면서 철학상담과의 공통분모의 가능성을 모색한다. 이를 위해 제 2절에서는 심리학계에서 상담이라는 개념을 어떻게 사용하고 있는지 분석한다. 상담, 심리상담, 심리치료를 구분하면서도 그동안 관행적으로 구분하지 않고 사용한 사실을 지적한다. 니스털과 이장호 등 대부분의 국내외 학자들은 상담과 심리상담을 같은 의미로 사용하고 있지만, 박성희는 상담이 한 분야에 종속되지 않는 개방된 메타적 과정언어라고 주장한다. 전자의 경우에 상담이 철학상담을 담을 수 없지만 후자의 경우에는 담을 수 있다고 본다. 제 3절에서 피터 라베의 분석에 기반하여 철학상담의 정체성과 심리치료와의 바람직한 관계를 모색한다. 그에 따르면 그동안 철학상담과 심리치료의 차별성을 강조하려는 시도들이 다소 과장되었고 이 둘을 구분해주는 결정적인 차이점은 철학적 사유를 도와준다는 점에 있다는 것이다. ‘철학하기’가 철학상담의 정체성을 확립해주는 것이고 따라서 철학상담은 일차적으로 철학실천이라는 유의 한 종이다. 물론 철학상담도 상담의 한 종류로 볼 수 있다. 그러나 아직 상담과 심리상담, 심리치료 간의 관계가 명확하게 정립되지 않은 채로 섣불리 철학상담을 상담의 한 종류로 규정하는 것은 자칫 오해를 불러일으킬 수 있기 때문에 조심스럽게 접근해야 한다.
Abstract
In this essay, I try to inquire the difference between philosophical counseling and psychological counseling from essential perspectives not from one of some phenomenal characteristics. Against the hasty assumption that we should focus on peculiar aspects of philosophical counseling because psychological counseling is already established while philosophical counseling is in an initial stage, I pursue the possible common ground of philosophical counseling with psychological counseling with critical examinations on psychological counseling. For these, in section two, I analyze the usages of some related words, counseling, psychological counseling and psychotherapy among psychologists. Most psychologists such as Nystul and Chang Ho Lee interchangeably use these while Sung Hee Park regards counseling as an independent and open meta-procedural language. Counselling may involve philosophical counseling in the latter while it may not in the former. In section three, based on Peter Raabe's analysis, I identify philosophical counseling and seek for its ideal relationship with psychotherapy. According to him, most endeavors to emphasize the difference between them are exaggerated, and the crucial difference is that philosophical counselors help counselees think philosophically. Doing philosophy is what identifies philosophical counseling, and philosophical counseling is primarily a species of a genus, philosophical practice. Philosophical counseling may, of course, be seen as a kind of counseling, but we should be careful to approach to the matter of its identity and relationship with counseling because hasty identification without a clear elucidation on them may cause a serious misunderstanding.
