Abstract

This study analyzed interview data collected by 20 college students who took Educational Research Methodology course during Fall 2011 at a public university in Korea to further understand student perceptions and experiences related to report plagiarism in college courses. The study results indicate that student plagiarism in college courses is indeed a common practice and three themes emerged including 1) perceptions of plagiarism; 2) instructor characteristics; and 3) assignment characteristics. Among many influencing factors affecting student plagiarism, the instructor variable seems to be most important and interesting part of the complex puzzle. Finally, from a student-perspective, the study presents the following guidelines for college instructors: 1) The instructor him/herself should develop a sincere and strong interest in student plagiarism to be able to positively influence student behaviors and prevent student plagiarism; 2) The instructor should continuously communicate the importance of academic integrity. A lip-service or one-day event will never stop student plagiarism; 3) It is important to give course assignments with appropriate difficulty level. Assignments that are too difficult(or easy) can lead students to submit plagiarized work instead of completing them on their own; 4) The best way to prevent student plagiarism is to give assignments that are difficult to copy; and 5) The instructor should be careful when recycle the topic and format of assignments from previous semesters. If an instructor gives the same assignments every semester, it can send the wrong message to the students. The study argues that the aforementioned guidelines can provide meaningful insights for educators as well as researchers to better understand the complex phenomenon of student plagiarism and improve our educational practice to promote academic integrity.
