Abstract
Based on a survey with 435 college students and in-depth interviews with 17 college students on their misuse of information resources while completing course assignments, the study attempts to answer the following two questions: (a) how (and how often) do college students misuse various types of digital information resources while completing course assignments?; and (b) what are the main factors that influence on such misuse of digital information resources? The survey and interview results indicate that (a) there are limited instructional opportunities available to inform college students on proper use of various digital information resources; (b) regardless of the participant’s year in college, major, or the type of course assignment, the most commonly misused digital information resource was free Internet contents; (c) lack of confidence was most frequently reported reason contributing to college students’ misuse of digital information resources while completing course assignments; and (d) participants’ major and the type of course assignment seem to be co-related to the misuse of digital information resources. Based on the study findings, it is argued that there is a need to build an instructional design model to promote ethical use of information resources as part of meaningful learning which can also provide guidelines for instructors to articulate course assignments and monitor the progress of student learning.
