Abstract
This study analyzed university students' perception and knowledge of plagiarism, as well as the relationship between them, to provide implications for university writing education and plagiarism prevention strategies. A plagiarism awareness questionnaire (6 factors, 26 questions) and a plagiarism knowledge test (10 multiple-choice questions, 10 true-false questions) were administered to 777 university students in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces. The analysis revealed that plagiarism prevention education improved normative awareness of plagiarism, but did not produce statistically significant differences in knowledge levels. Conversely, the group with high plagiarism awareness had significantly higher knowledge levels than the group with low plagiarism awareness. Regression analysis revealed that plagiarism attitudes and awareness of social causes had a positive effect on knowledge levels, whereas plagiarism experience had a negative effect. Students majoring in education and medicine had higher awareness and knowledge levels than students in other majors, while those majoring in humanities, social sciences, engineering, arts, and physical education showed a significant difference among themselves. These results suggest that college writing education should go beyond simply fostering attitudes and include repeated and in-depth training in citation and reference rules, and the skills needed to apply them in real-world assignments. Furthermore, to prevent unintentional plagiarism, customized and, specialized educational strategies aimed at bridging the gap between awareness and knowledge, along with improvements in teaching and learning environments, are needed.
