초등 「사회」 교과서에 나타난 지도 자료 및 지도 기능 학습의 특성과 문제점 분석

초록

본 논문은 초등 사회과에서 이루어지고 있는 지도 학습에 대하여 더 나은 대안을 모색하기 위한 장기적이고 본격적인 연구에 앞선 문제 제기 성격의 기초적인 작업으로서, 현행 초등 「사회」 교과서에 나타나고 있는 지도 자료 및 지도 기능 학습의 특성과 문제점을 총체적으로 분석하고, 가능한 범위 내에서 그 시론적(始論的)인 개선 방안을 제시해보고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 초등 3∼6학년 「사회」 교과서에 등장하는 모든 ‘지도 자료’와 ‘지도 기능’ 학습을 분석의 대상으로 삼아 그 특징과 문제점을 고찰하였다. 지도 자료의 경우, 색상과 디자인의 일관성, 정보의 질과 양, 축척의 선택, 지도 관련 개념의 활용, 그리고 지도 제시 방식 등의 측면에서 학습 주제와 조응하지 못하는 문제점이 있었으며, 이에 따른 개선안을 제시하였다. 지도 기능 학습의 경우, 내용의 선정 및 조직의 측면에서 개인적·사회적 및 학문적 적합성을 부분적으로 만족시키지 못하는 문제점이 있었다. 이에 대하여 수치 지도 학습, 조망 학습, 좌표식 위치 학습, 그리고 주제도 작성 학습 등을 강화하는 보완책을 제안하였다. 그리고 현재의 사회경제적인 변화에 비추어 볼 때, 지도를 주로 이해의 대상으로 여기는 기존의 학습관에서 벗어나 정보 저장과 전달의 적극적인 수단으로 활용할 수 있게 하는 응용 중심의 지도 학습관으로 전환할 필요가 있다고 사료된다.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze ?map learning activities? in current social studies of elementary school. Based on the analysis, this study provides several alternative ways to solve the problems social studies of elementary school. The analysis of the study focused on two aspects: map materials and map skills in social studies texts (grade 3-6). The findings are as follows. The map materials of texts do not coincide with the learning subjects of texts; its have no consistence in aspect of colour and design, have no coherence in aspect of quality and quantity of map contents. And its have a many problems in terms of scale choosing, concept using, and map presenting. The map activities of elementary social studies do not reflect personal, social and disciplinary needs in terms of scope and sequence of map learning. In order to solve these problems, it is proposed that introduce the concepts of digital map, perspective, grid reference system, and thematic map making to map learning in social studies of new curriculum of elementary school. And it is necessary to strengthen map-applying learning.
