Abstract

Despite the fact that map skill instruction continues to be an important aspect of the curriculum for social studies at the elementary grade level, advanced and effective methodologies for map teaching have not been adopted to elementary school students. Therefore, this study suggested a customized hierarchy of map skill instruction according to grade level. The study conducted a literature review to perform in-depth analysis on the types of map skills and hierarchical learning curves in map skills and defined issues related to the current teaching activities presented in textbooks in schools. The results demonstrated that each map skill instruction was disconnected between grades and linked to the next advanced level in an inappropriate manner. Therefore, this study suggested activities for teaching map skills that can improve student performance with regard to map skill acquisition. Aspects of map skills (e.g., map reading, analysis, and drawing), which the study established through the literature review, were arranged hierarchically and displayed according to elementary school grade level. This study is a basic one on sequenced map skill instruction, which requires further research
