Abstract

This study aims to explore the meaning and condition of happiness presented in integrated education courses and to explore the direction of approach in geography education. To this end, the study summarized the meaning of happiness into concepts of satisfaction of life, quality of life and well-being and analyzed the differences between these concepts. Also, it looked at various conditions of happiness including income, income inequality, quality of government, social capital, and the quality of residential environment. It then explored ways to organize the content of geography education on the meaning and conditions of happiness after analyzing how happiness was discussed and organized in the Australian 10th grade geography textbook. The results are summarized as follows. First, the meaning of happiness has been extended from life satisfaction and subjective well-being to quality of life and well-being. Second, while level of income and level of happiness are correlated in low income countries, the impact of income on happiness decreases in high income countries. Inequality, the quality of government and the quality of residential environment as well as income are important for happiness. Third, geographical textbooks in Australia interprets the concept of happiness as quality or well-being of life than the satisfaction of life, and is organized to help students understand factors that affect the quality and well-being of life.
