Abstract

This study investigates women's attitude towards trade unions in Korea, and whether its determinants differ from those of men's. Using data collected by the SSK(Social Sciences Korea) High Road Social Rights research team, this study found that the attitudes of women and men towards trade unions were quite similar, indicating that the lower level of women's organizational rate is mostly due to structural barriers. However, the results of the separate regression analysis for men and women respondents indicate that the determinants of women's attitudes towards trade unions were different from those of men's. Unlike men, women with lowest socioeconomic status had more positive attitudes towards trade unions, although their trust level for trade unionists was lower. For women, preferences for social services and higher level of welfare did not affect their attitudes towards trade unions, meaning that trade unions fail to mobilize women's support for strong welfare state. Feminist attitudes among women respondents did not translate into a high level of antipathy towards male-centric trade unions. Instead, it generated more positive attitudes towards trade unions, as an important democratic organization to correct inequalities and discrimination at the workplace. This study implies that if trade unions actively engage in organizational drives for women workers, the organizational rate can increase substantially.
