이 연구의 목적은 한국 개신교의 성장과 감소를 문화적 혼성화 이론으로 이해하는 것이다. 그리하여 지금까지의 한국 개신교에 대한 사회적이고 윤리적인 비판과는 다른 새로운 개신교 종교문화 담론을 시도하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 이논문은 혼성화 이론을 탐구한다. 그리고 나서 문화적 혼성성을 중심으로 한국 개신교를 성장과 감소의 시기로 나누어 분석한다. 먼저 성장의 시기에는 개신교가자본주의의 영향 아래에서 타종교 전통과 결합하거나 또는 민중신학과 같이 사회운동에 민감한 양상을 드러내며 독특한 한국 개신교만의 문화적 혼성성을 형성 하였다. 반면에 감소의 시기에 한국 개신교는 근본주의적 성격이 강화되고 자본주의적 가치에 전도된 모습을 보이고 있다. 이로 인해 한국 개신교는 문화적 혼성성을잃어가고 있다.
Abstract
This article aims to understand the growth and decline of Korean Protestantism in terms of cultural hybridization. It also attempts to produce a new academic discourse on Korean Protestantism rather than replicating similar socio-ethical critiques in regard to modernism. Thus, the article initially considers theories of cultural hybridization. Afterwards, it analyzes the growth and decline by observing how Korean Protestantism has formulated its own cultural hybridity. In the period of growth, Korean Protestantism constituted the cultural hybridity by means of encountering with other religious traditions and produced a local theology such as minjung theology within socio-political concern. Whilst, most Korean Protestant churches have put an overemphasis on the purity of Gospel, namely fundamentalism, and have been captured by the capitalist value in the period of the decline. Presumably, these two factors lead lessening the cultural hybridity of Korean Protestantism.
