Abstract

Women are less likely to be unionized than men. This paper analyzes the reason of these phenomena to determine wether female workers are less interested in unionizing than male workers or they are equally interested but face higher barriers to unionization. To find out which explanations are fitted to the fact, we analyze the 6th panel data of KLI's KLIPs, by using logit analysis. It is found the mixed empirical results in two samples. In non-unionized sample, women are equally interested as well as men in joining union. This result support that there is a gender-specific taste toward union. However, in union sample, the propensity of joining union of female workers is not statically different from that of male workers. It is implied that women may face higher barrier to unionization than men. In sum, it is certain that the reason of lower unionization rate in female workers is the combination of low interest and higher barriers. It is also found that the attitude towards unionization of women is affected by external satisfaction.
