Abstract

This study investigated the meaning that children in gifted education assign to the term "gifted" through metaphor analysis. 128 elementary and middle school students from a Science Gifted and Talented Education Center in a southern regional National University took part in the study. Their answers were collected using a qualitative questionnaire that may metaphorically express the perception of gifted students. After comparing and analyzing the responses over and over, 10 subcategories and 4 main categories emerged: gifted children's intellectual abilities, gifted children's social worth, gifted children's open thinking, and gifted children's earnest efforts. In addition, we investigated whether gender, school level, media exposure to gifted cases, and the influence of others on gifted education influence how the metaphor is presented to gifted students. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in how the subcategories of intellectual ability were presented for students who had seen gifted cases in the media versus those who had not. This study can be used as basic data to identify the opportunity for prejudice against gifted children or the psychological and academic effects that may arise by confirming the meaning of "gifted" for students at the Gifted Education Center.
