현대사회를 연구하는 일 중에서 예술이 정치나 경제 권력으로부터 얼마나 독자적인 활동을 할 수 있는가를 살펴보는 것은 매우 중요한 과제이다. 왜냐하면 사회 기능의 제(諸) 영역 안에서 예술이 자율적으로 움직일 수 ‘있다, 혹은 없다’라는 기준은 한 특정국가의 문화수준을 측정하는 객관적 기준이 될 수 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 ‘예술은 인간의 자유를 표현하는 형식’이라고 전제하고, ‘예술의 자율성 부재’란 ‘자유롭지 못한 사회에 있어서 개인들의 구속적 상태를 반영하고 있다’라는 주장은 매우 설득력이 있는 주장이라 할 수 있다. 그러한 전제로 예술은 한 국가와 사회에 있어서 문화의 핵심이고 동시에 그 사회의 총체적 척도가 된다. 그러므로 경제적 부는 지금의 상태를 진단하는 현실적 지표이지만 예술은 ‘유토피아적 목적설정’을 통해 한 특정한 사회의 미래적 전망을 드러낸다고 볼 수 있다. 그런데 예술이 정치나 경제 권력의 시녀가 아닌 독자적 힘을 갖게 될 수 있는 사회적 조건은 과연 무엇일까? 본 연구에서는 공론장(公論場)의 개념과 그 개념의 발생사의 해명을 통해 예술 자율성의 제 조건을 탐구한다. 공론장 개념의 발생과 전개과정은 서구의 시민사회의 등장 및 변이과정과 깊은 관련을 맺고 있다. 사회과학자들은 신문을 포함한 인쇄물이 정기적으로 간행되고 익명으로 구입하는 독자층으로부터 비판적 영역이 처음으로 형성되었고 그곳에서 매개되는 원리를 ‘공개성(公開性)’이라고 명명한다. 그리고 그 형성 과정의 원초적인 형태는 문예비평을 담을 수 있는 ‘문예적 공론장’의 성립이라고 할 수 있다. 현대사회에 이르렀음에도 불구하고 문예적 공론장의 활성화 여부를 가늠하는 과제는 정치 경제 측면의 사회적 공론장의 내면적 발전 정도를 측정할 수 있는 기준을 설정한다는 점에서 그것에 대한 탐구는 무척 중요한 의의를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 필요성은 바로 이러한 전제로부터 출발한다.
Abstract
It is a very important task to look at how independent the art can be from politics or economic power in the study of modern society. That is because the criteria of ‘yes or no’ that the art can move autonomously within the domain of social functioning can be an objective criterion on measuring the level of culture of one particular country. Therefore, it is a very convincing argument that ‘the art is a form of expression of human freedom’ and ‘autonomy of art’ reflects ‘the binding state of individuals in an unfree society’. Under this premise, art becomes the core of culture in a nation and a society, and at the same time it becomes a total measure of society. Accordingly economic wealth is a realistic indicator of the present state, but art reveals the future prospects of one particular society through the ‘utopian purpose setting’. But what is the social condition that art can have its own power, not just a maid of politics or economic power? In this study, we explore the conditions of the autonomy of the art through the explanation of the concept and its origin of the public sphere. The development of the concept of the public sphere is deeply related to the emergence and transformation of the western civil society. Social scientists have first formed a critical sphere from readers who periodically buy printed material, including newspapers, and the principle mediated there is called ‘publicity’. The basis of the formation process is the establishment of a ‘literary public sphere’ that can contain literary criticism. The task of measuring the activation of ‘the literary public sphere’, even in contemporary society, is very important in that it establishes criteria for measuring the degree of internal development of the social public sphere in terms of political and economical aspect. The need for this study begins with this premise.
