연구 목적: 이 연구의 목적은 1949년에 주한 미국 공보원이 발행한 잡지 『월간 아메리카』에 실린 번역 소설 「백로」의 번역 전략을 연구하여 이 소설의 번역 전략이 당시 미국 공보원의 여성관 및 민주주의 이식 목표를 반영하였음을 밝히는 것이다. 연구 방법: 사회적 내러티브 이론과 제도적 번역 이론을 연구 방법 및 배경으로 삼아 「백로」의 번역 전 과정에서 원문과 다른 내러티브가 생성되었는지 분석하였다. 연구 내용: 거시적 단계 번역 결과와 미시적 단계 번역 결과를 원문의 그것과 비교 분석하여 가부장제를 대표하는 주인공 남성은 부정적으로 프레이밍 되었음을 밝혔다. 또한 여성 주인공에 대해서는 가부장제를 탈피하는 새로운 여성으로 내러티브가 프레이밍 되었음을 논하였다. 결론 및 제언: 이러한 번역 방식은 여성의 지위 상승을 민주주의 이식의 중요한 단계로 간주하였던 미군정 및 미국 국무성의 관점을 반영하며, 이는 곧 「백로」의 번역에 기관의 이데올로기가 반영되었음을 의미한다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the translation strategy of “A White Heron” in Wolgan Amerika and to show that the translation strategy of the novel is related to the US Information Service’s view of women and its aim to implant democracy in Korea. Drawing on the socio-narrative theory and the institutional translation theory as research methods, this study explored whether narratives different from the original text were framed in the target text in the translation process. By comparing and analyzing the macro- and micro-level translation strategies, this study discussed that the male protagonist representing patriarchy was framed negatively, and, in the case of the female protagonist, the narratives of a new woman who challenged the patriarchal system were framed. These translation strategies reflected the views of the US on women, which regarded the improvement of women’s status as an important step in implanting democracy. This also meant that the institutional ideology was reflected in the translation of “A White Heron.”
