Abstract

This article seeks to reinterpret Han Seol-ya’s post-liberation texts by reconstructing the inner landscape of the writer. Han is widely known as a writer with firm political convictions, and his political trajectory has typically been understood through the lens of “Pyongyang centralism.” However, the texts he published immediately after liberation are difficult to interpret as efforts to establish a new political or cultural center in “Joseon.” Rather, they should be read as attempts to bring the concept of locality itself into discourse. At the heart of this endeavor lies a deeply rooted antagonism toward “Seoul.” To analyze this, the study examines the indigenous qualities characteristic of Han’s literary style and investigates their origins. In particular, it explores his autobiographical essay My Lessons in Humanity, My Lessons as a Writer(1956), through which Han’s complex about Gyeongseong(colonial-era Seoul) becomes evident. The study also highlights how Han actively employed the symbolic figures of the “Soviet Union” and “Kim Il-sung” as rhetorical tools to critique Seoul-centrism. Works such as The Cap, which centers on a Soviet soldier as a traumatized subject, and A Way of Blood and A Triumphal Return, which depict Kim Il-sung’s movements, can be understood as literary efforts to provincialize “Joseon.” By examining the dynamic process through which Han’s imagined geography was reconstructed, this article ultimately aims to revisit the significance of the inter-Korean boundary and the foundational discourses of divided literature.
