Abstract

This paper interprets Han Seolya’s colonial-era texts set in the Gwanbuk region through the lens of “mobility” as a narrative framework. Through multiple (non-)literary works published during the colonial period, Han employed the rhetoric, representation, and literary imagination of “mobility” to expose political and economic contradictions in the region while constructing narrative strategies to resist them. After returning from Manchuria, he confronted the transformed landscapes of his homeland, highlighting how the influx of imperial capital and frequent floods produced specific forms of “mobility” within the region. His narratives particularly underscore how population displacement and (re)distribution were deeply implicated in the formation of colonial subjectivity, at the same time revealing prospects for collective action emerging from within the governance techniques that sought to control and discipline such “mobility.” Set against the backdrop of the empire’s distorted industrialization, Han’s Gwanbuk texts exemplify the diverse facets of colonial proletarian literature by focusing on how these systemic forces permeate the everyday lives of the subaltern.
