Abstract
This study aimed to discover the antecedents of workplace sexual harassment in South Korean contexts, focusing on the differences in causal processes between men and women. Utilizing survey data of 1,150 employees (452 males and 698 females) collected by the Korean Institute of Criminology in 2016, the current study constructed a composite model composed of biological/natural, sociocultural, organizational, and individual differences models, and employed Negative Binomial regression analyses to test it. Results showed that the probability of men's committing sexual harassment increases when they are in their 20-30s with more than one year of job career and have more distorted perception on gender. Whereas, women's probability of sexual harassment offense appeared to go up when those in similar situations to their male counterparts met other additional conditions such as sex ratio, job stability, and income. It was notable that the distorted perception on gender has one of the strongest effects both on men and women, which suggested that lots of societal and organizational efforts (e.g., anti-harassment training, gender-fair policy) are necessitated to improve the perception on gender. In addition, gender disparity had to be eased off to prevent men's sexual harassment. As one of the first empirical attempts to examine the causal factors of workplace sexual harassment in South Korean contexts, this study is expected to contribute to expanding the knowledge on the issue gaining a huge public attention.
