Abstract

Me Too Movement has been spread out since October 2017. In South Korea, the movement has initiated in January 2018, and victims of the sex offense from various areas, such a movie industry, have disclosed their victimization. The current study aims to review Me Too Movement cases that have been disclosed between March and April 2018, and to draw implications of the movement on Korean society and its criminal justice system. We review Me Too movement from the naming and shaming framework and consider the movement to be an effective response to particular crime cases. Given 28 Me Too cases, we found that offenders were successful professionals in their occupational areas and victims usually shared their interests with the offenders. There also existed bystanders who passively or actively assisted the offenses. Given these findings, we characterize the Me Too movement as an response to the victims' low satisfaction with the criminal justice system. The movement can also be explained as a vigilantism caused by failure of criminal justice policies. We suggested several implications of the movement on criminal justice.
