Abstract
This study explored how adult learners' motivation for participating in lifelong learning affects their subjective well-being, focusing specifically on the mediating role of learning satisfaction in this relationship. As contemporary society faces rapid demographic changes, digital transformation, and increasing labor market uncertainty, adult engagement in lifelong learning has become crucial not only for maintaining professional competencies but also for enhancing quality of life and ensuring psychological stability. Understanding how motivation influences learning experiences and well-being provides valuable insights for educational practices and research. The study involved a sample of 251 adult learners aged 30 and older who were enrolled in beauty-related programs at colleges in the Daegu–Gyeongbuk region. Data were gathered through questionnaires assessing lifelong learning participation motivation, learning satisfaction, and subjective well-being. The data were then analyzed using SPSS 25.0, employing frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, regression analysis, and the Sobel test. The results identified four factors of participation motivation: learning-oriented, stability-oriented, goal-oriented, and future-oriented motivation. Learning satisfaction emerged as a single factor, while subjective well-being comprised two factors—positive well-being and social well-being. Regression analyses revealed that participation motivation positively influenced both learning satisfaction and subjective well-being. Moreover, learning satisfaction served as a significant mediator in the relationship between participation motivation and subjective well-being, indicating that satisfying learning experiences enhance adult learners' psychological and social well-being. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence that adult learners' motivation to participate in lifelong learning enhances their subjective well-being through learning satisfaction. By focusing on adult learners in beauty-related fields, the findings offer practical implications for designing lifelong education programs, promoting learner engagement, and fostering supportive learning environments. This research highlights the educational and psychological significance of lifelong learning in supporting adult learners' personal growth and well-being
