Abstract

This study explores the spatial distribution of alcohol-providing or selling establishments in violation of the Food Sanitation Act (hereafter “violating establishments”) targeting adolescents in Seoul, South Korea. In particular, it analyzes the proximity of these violating establishments to youth-concentrated facilities with a specific focus on school environments. To identify the spatial radius around school facilities where violations are likely to occur, we collected data on the locations of high schools in Seoul and a list of restaurants classified as violating establishments under the relevant law. Drawing on Crime Pattern Theory, this study assumes that adolescents are more likely to encounter opportunities for delinquent behavior within familiar environments along their daily routes, such as commuting to and from school. Based on this framework, the radius of familiar environments was estimated using the distance from school facilities. The findings reveal that violating establishments are significantly concentrated within a radius of 800–1,100 m from high schools in Seoul. Based on these results, the study suggests implementing targeted prevention policies focused on these high-risk zones with a concentrated distribution of violating establishments.
