Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between alcohol outlet density and crime rates. The geographic basis for this study was Y-gu, an administrative district, in X city, South Korea. The geographic unit of analysis was the census output area, an equivalent to the census block group in the U.S. This study collected the crime data from Y police station, the on-and off-premise alcohol establishment data from Y-gu Administrative Office, and the demographic data from the Korean National Statistical Office. These datasets were collected in 2015. With these datasets, this study tested the differing effects of on-and off-premise alcohol retail establishments on the violence crime rates while controlling other socio-demographic features. Methodologically, identifying the existence of spatial autocorrelation among structural covariates of violent crime rate, this study performed spatial regression analyses on the relationship between alcohol outlet density and violent crime rate. Base on the results, this study suggests that policies be implemented to prevent possible violent crimes within areas with a high alcohol outlet density by deploying more police resources and setting up additional surveillance appliances.
