Abstract

With the increasing awareness of ecological crises, including climate change, discussions on the importance of ecological citizenship as a solution to these crises have become prominent. However, despite the growing interest in ecological citizenship, there has been a lack of sophisticated theoretical discussions on the concept. This paper explores the theoretical foundations of ecological citizenship by first examining the concept within the traditions of republicanism and citizenship theory. It argues that with respect to the recent emphasis on the role of religion as a source of ecological citizenship, the insights provided by civic republicanism, which focuses on civic responsibility and virtues, can offer valuable insights.
