공화주의는 정치적 자유의 사상일 뿐만 아니라 정치적 자유의 실현과 유지에 꼭 필요한 덕성에 대한 이론이기도 하다. 공화주의 사상가들은 수세기에 걸쳐 오직 시민들이 시민적 덕성(civic virtue)을 지니고 있는 곳에서만 자유가 살아남을 수 있다고 주장해 왔다. ‘공화주의’와 ‘시민성’은 오래된, 서로 얽히고설킨 개념들이다. 고전적 공화주의 사상가들에 의하면, 시민 없는 공화국은 존재할 수 없으며 공화국 없는 시민 또한 있을 수 없다. 오늘날 공화주의와 시민성에 대한 관심의 부활은 일종의 위기의식에서 비롯되었다 할 수 있다. 즉, 우리가 소중한 그 무엇이 상실될 위기에 처해 있다는 불안한 느낌이 그것이다. 이러한 상실감은 정치적 안정과 개인적 자유에 대해 매우 위협적인 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 따라서 공화주의적 시민성에 대한 교육은 반드시 필요한 시대적 요청이다. 이에 본 연구는 공화주의적 시민성이 갖는 윤리교육적 함의를 밝히는 데 목표를 두고, 이러한 목표를 달성하기 위해 공화국의 본질적 요소인 공공성과 자치로부터 공화주의의 주요 원리들인 시민적 덕성, 법의 지배, 비지배적 자유, 혼합정 등을 도출한 후, 다시 이로부터 공화주의적 시민성의 관점에서 ‘좋은 시민’의 특징들을 안출하는 작업을 수행할 것이다. 그리고 이러한 작업을 근거로 도덕과 수업에서 공화주의적 시민성을 교육할 때 고려해야할 사항들을 제언하고자 한다.
Abstract
Republicanism is a thought not only of political liberty but also of the virtue that political liberty needs. The political argument that republican theorists have repeated over the centuries is that liberty can survive only if citizens possess civic virtue. ‘Republicanism’ and ‘citizenship’ are old and intertwined concepts. According to the classical republican thinkers, there is no republic without citizens, and there is no citizenship except among those who are fortunate enough to inhabit a republic. The revival of interest in republicanism and in citizenship grows out of the sense that something valuable is in danger of being lost. That loss will have grievous consequences for political stability and individual freedom. So, teaching republican citizenship is an urgent request for our times. In this respect, this article aims to articulate the implications of republican citizenship in ethics education. With this aim in mind, the author deduces defining features of ‘good citizen’ from core concepts of republicanism, and then proposes several considerations for teaching republican citizenship.
