시민성은 공동체주의, 공화주의, 자유주의 등으로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 그런데 최근 자유주의 시민성에서 비롯된 파편적 개인주의를 비판하면서 이에 대한 대안으로 공동체주의 시민성이나 공화주의 시민성에 대한 논의가 활발해지고 있다. 특히 그중 공화주의는 새롭게 정치적 화두로 등장하면서 학계뿐만 아니라 현실 정치에서도 담론의 대상이 되고 있다. 공화주의는 개인보다는 공동체, 사적 이익보다는 공공선에 초점을 맞추고 있으며 정치에 대한 적극적 참여와 법에 의한 통치를 중시하고, 준법, 자기 절제, 헌신 등 시민적 덕목의 함양을 통해 공동체의 발전과 번영을 추구하는 시민성을 강조하고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 공화주의 시민성에 대해 살펴보고 이것이 현대 사회에 주는 긍정적 의의를 알아봄과 동시에 이러한 공화주의 시민성의 담론이 지닌 한계에 살펴보고 우리가 공화주의 시민성을 논의할 때 특히 유념해야할 점에 대해 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
Abstract
The theory of citizenship can be classified into liberal, communitarian, and republican citizenship. By the way, most scholars assume a critical attitude toward liberal citizenship and regard republican citizenship as an alternative theory for it. Especially, as republican citizenship newly appears into political topic, it is discussed in the field of the academic world and political circles. Republican citizenship focuses on a community rather than an individual, common good rather than private interest. It emphasizes positive political participation, common good, constitutional government, civic-virtues which contain the law-abiding spirit, self-restraint and self-sacrifice for the development of the community. The purpose of this study is to examine diverse aspects of republican citizenship, to explore its positive meanings for modern society and its limitations which we ought to pay attention to. By exploring the history of republican citizenship, I take into consideration the theory of Aristoteles, Cicero, Machiavelli, Tocqueville, Arendt, Viroli, Pettit in this study. In conclusion, this study is to show that republican citizenship does not hold a prominent position in citizenship theories unlike the assertion of republican ideas.
