Abstract
Myeongdeok (明德) is the first of the Three Guiding Principles (三綱) of The Great Learning (『大學』). Since Chiji (致知) is found in Gyeongmul (格物), Gyeongmulchiji (格物致知) can be considered the first study for self-cultivation that Daehak, The Great Learning, must undertake. Zhuxi (朱子) defined Myeongdeok as Nature (性), but also as Mind (心). If we consider Myeongdeok (明德) as Nature (性), a metaphysical substance, then we should not use the term Numinous Emptiness (虛靈), as Shin Hu-dam (愼後聃) argues. However, if we consider it as Mind, as Lee Gwang-chan does, then since Mind belongs to Qi (氣), we can also use Numinous Emptiness. In Gyeongmul (格物), Zhuxi expanded Daehak's Gyeongmul to encompass all things. Shin Hu-dam viewed Gyeongmul as a distinction between Myeongdeok and Sinmin (新民), and Chiji as the exploration of the Li (理) of the supreme good (至善). He thus understood Gyeongmul and Chiji as two forms of self-cultivation, whereas Lee Gwang-chan viewed them as a single form of self-cultivation. In interpreting Chi (致), Zhuxi interpreted it as "to push through to the end (推極)," and Lee Gwang-chan followed suit. However, Shin Hu-dam interpreted it as "to fulfill (盡)." Shin Hu-dam not only divided Gyeongmul and Chiji into two distinct realms, but also included Gyeongmul within Chiji. Lee Gwang-chan argued that each of the Eight Articles (八條目)'s self-cultivation is an organically connected study. Shin Hu-dam's Daehakhuhuseol (『大學後說』) is considered a work that follows The ancient-version Daehak (古本『大學』) rather than Zhu Xi's Daxuezhangju (『大學章句』), but offers interpretations that differ from those of the Yangming Studies. Based on the Zhuzi Studies, Lee Gwang-chan criticized Shin Hu-dam's claims regarding Myeongdeok and Gyeongmulchiji However, neither Shin Hu-dam nor Lee Gwang-chan offered new interpretations of Gyeongmul and Chiji. Lee Gwang-chan discussed scholarship with Lee Gwang-sin (李匡臣), Lee Gwang-ryeo (李匡呂), Lee Gwang-sa (李匡師), and Lee Gwang-Myeong (李匡明). So, people misunderstand Lee Gwang-chan as a scholar of the Hagok School. But actually Lee Gwang-chan is a Neo-Confucian scholar following the Zhuzi Studies.
