Abstract
Lee Gwang-chan’s understanding of “Great Learning Chapters(大學章句)” is based on Zhu Xi’s “Great Learning Chapters”. This paper develops its argument in the order of Lee Gwang-chan’s critique of “Daehakhuseol.” First, in Zhu Xi’s ‘The Preface Great Learning Chapters(大學章句序)’ ‘mun(文) of Etiquette, music, archery, horseback riding, writing, and calculating’, does ‘mun’ mean ‘name of thing’ or ‘skill(習)’? Lee Gwang-chan believed that it meant ‘name of thing’ because it was written by a Zhu Xi. However, Shin Hu-dam interpreted it as ‘skill’ because there is also a sentence in “Question and Answer of Great Learning(大學或問)” that says ‘Learn the Etiquette, music, archery, horseback riding, writing, and calculating(禮樂射御書數之習)’. However, as Lee Gwang-chan argues, understanding it as ‘name of thing’ is more appropriate in the context of ‘The Preface Great Learning Chapters’. Sceond, Books. Whether or not Cheng yi-chuan has written anything related to the Great Learning. Lee Gwang-chan said that there were no original writings related to “The Great Learning”, while Shin Hu-dam said that there were writings. It is generally accepted that there are no works by Cheng yi-chuan related to the Great Learning. Third, ‘supplementing the missing and omitted parts’. Lee Gwang-chan argued that ‘supplementing the missing and omitted parts’ refers to Zhu Xi’s ‘BuZhuan(補傳)’, while Shin Hu-dam argued that it refers to ‘supplementing the missing and omitted parts’ in the Great Learning written by Cheng yi-chuan. Fourth, the word “learning(學)” in “The Great Learning”. Lee Gwang-chan interpreted it as ‘school’. Shin Hu-dam interpreted it, following Zhu Xi’s interpretation, as ‘the learning of great men’ or ‘academics’. Fifth, Bright Virtue(明德). Lee Gwang-chan saw it as Mind, and cosmologically, it is also seen as human nature(性). Shin Hu-dam interpreted it as human nature. Zhu Xi spoke of ‘Bright Virtue’ both from the objective ontological aspect of human nature and from the functional aspect of the Mind.
