Abstract

In this study, 90 novice group therapists were randomly sampled and divided into three groups: an untreated control group, Experiment 1 group, and Experiment 2 group. The results showed significant changes in self-talk categories among the therapists participating in group therapy supervision. Specifically, in the novice therapists, the 'observation' category, initially high, decreased significantly, while the categories of 'interpretation', 'question', 'intervention', and 'group process' – more prevalent among experienced therapists – increased significantly. Furthermore, for the Experiment 2 group observing group therapy supervision, there were significant increases in the number of connections per concept, the number of circulation patterns, and the average distance in their knowledge structure. These findings indicate that participation in group therapy supervision makes the knowledge structure of novice group therapists more complex and increasingly similar to that of experienced group therapists.
