윤리학과 교육철학에서 ‘잘삶’의 의미와 역할

이 연구는 윤리학과 교육철학에서 잘삶(well-being)이라는 개념이 어떤 의미에서, 어떤 역할을 하는가를 윤리학자인 섬너(Sumner), 크라우트(Kraut), 헤이브론(Haybron), 그리고 교육철학자인 데니콜라(DeNicola)와 호스테틀러(Hostetler)를 중심으로 밝혀낸다. 여기서 잘삶이란 개인에게 좋은, 만족스러운 삶을 가리키며, 교양교육이나 교육의 목적도 개인으로 하여금 그에게 좋은, 만족스러운 삶이 어떤 것인가를 찾아, 잘 살아갈 수 있도록 도와주는 데 있다는 점이 밝혀진다. 윤리학에서 개인의 잘삶을 강조하는 것은 ‘좋음 중심’의 윤리학이 ‘옳음 중심’의 윤리학보다 더 근본적인 것이라는 점을 밝혀줄 것이다. 또한 개인의 잘삶에서 심리적 행복이 중요하다는 점은 잘삶의 성공적 추구를 위해 윤리학과 심리학이 결합될 필요가 있음을 밝혀줄 것이다. 그리고 잘삶을 목적으로 삼고 있는 교육철학에 관한 검토는 한편으로 그것이 잘삶의 윤리학을 기반으로 삼고 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 교양교육이나 일반교육에서 잘삶이 교육 목적으로서 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 보여줄 것이다. 이 연구는 교육현실에 대한 비판과 대안 모색에서 잘삶이 중요한 언어가 될 수 있고, 잘삶이라는 목적에 관한 진지한 논의가 다양하게 확충될 필요가 있음을 시사해준다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the notion of well-being in contemporary ethics and philosophy of education. The meaning and the role of well-being are examined on the basis both of the ethics of Sumner, Kraut, and Haybron and of the philosophy of education of DeNicola and Hostetler. For those philosophers, well-being means a good and happy life for particular individuals. For the philosophers of education, the aim of education and liberal education is to help students to look for the kind of life which is good and satisfactory for them and to prepare them to achieve such a life. The role of well-being in ethics is to explain that the good-based ethics is more fundamental than and prior to the right-based ethics as well as to show that inter-disciplinary approaches between ethics and psychology are necessary for the successful pursuit of well-being. It turns out that discussions of education for well-being in philosophy of education is based on the ethical theories of well-being, as well as that the notion of well-being is employed in the theory of liberal education and the theory of well-being as experience which are different from the approach of John White and other philosophers of educations. The study concludes that we need to take seriously the notion of individual well-being so as to look for a critical perspective from which we find an alternative vision to the educational practice in Korea.
