존 화이트의 『학교에서의 웰빙 탐색』에 나타난 웰빙(well-being) 개념과 교육

교육의 목적이 무엇이어야 하는지에 대해 다양한 견해가 존재하지만, 학생들을 행복하게 혹은 잘 살도록 하는데 있다는 점에서는 별 이견이 없는 듯이 보인다. 화이트는 피터스와 허스트의 이론적 활동을 추구하는 자유교육론을 비판하며, 개인의 웰빙에 목적을 둔 교육을 제안했다. 그의 웰빙 개념은 시기에 따라 ‘반성 후 욕구 충족’, ‘검증된 욕구 충족’, ‘내재적으로 가치 있는 활동과 관계에 전심으로 참여하며 성공적인 삶’으로 수정되어 왔다. 그러나 그의 웰빙 개념은 여전히 분명하지 않다. 이 논문의 목적은 모호한 화이트의 웰빙 개념을 명료화하고, 그의 웰빙 교육관을 비판적으로 논의하고자 한다. 이러한 목적을 위해 그의 웰빙 개념의 변천과정을 개관하고, 최근 웰빙 개념을 ‘내재적으로 가치 있는 활동과 관계’, ‘전심으로 참여’, ‘성공적인 삶’이라는 세 가지 준거를 중심으로 분석하며, 그의 웰빙 개념과 교육관을 검토한다. 그에 의하면, 웰빙은 개인의 선호나 욕구를 충족시키는 것에서 나아가 내재적으로 가치 있는 활동과 관계를 추구해야 한다. 화이트에 의하면, 개인의 웰빙에서 가치 있는것의 기준이 자의적인 것이 아니라 문화 의존적일 수밖에 없다. 화이트의 웰빙 개념을 명료하게 하는 것은 ‘웰빙교육’이 정확히 무엇이며, 실제로 어떻게 이루어져야 하는지에 대한 한 가지 예시를 보여준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify and discuss White's conception of well-being and education. Many people agree that education should be the promotion of a pupil's well-being, although they have different views on what constitutes well-being. White criticized Peters and Hirst's liberal education as the pursuit of theoretical knowledge. He has revised his conceptions of well-being from time to time: “post-reflection desire satisfaction,” “informed desire satisfaction,” and “successful and whole-hearted engagement in intrinsically worthwhile activities and relationships.” Nevertheless, his concept of well-being remains unclear. In this paper, we analyze his recent concept of well-being based on three criteria: “intrinsically worthwhile activities and relationships,” “whole-hearted engagement,” and “successful life.” We also critically discuss his well-being education. White addresses the promotion of a pupil's well-being, but he does not deny the overlapping objective values list. The overlapping objective values list implies that the criteria of personal preferences or desires for a successful life are culture-dependent. Well-being education is understood as helping everyone to enjoy this.
