잘삶의 통합적 이해와 교육적 함의

초록

본 연구는 ‘잘삶(well-being)’을 통합적 관점에서 이해하고 이것의 교육적 시사점을 탐구한다. 전통적으로 잘삶에 대한 이해는 크게 객관적 이론과 주관적 이론으로 구분되어 왔다. 그러나 양자 모두 인간의 잘삶을 총체적으로 이해하는 데에는 한계를 지니고 있다. 이를 극복하기 위한 대안적인 통합적 접근으로 루이터(Doret de Ruyter)의 ‘행복한 잘삶’, 화이트(John White)의 ‘문화관련적 잘삶’을 중심으로 논의한다. 행복한 잘삶은 객관적으로 파악할 수 있는 선의 충족과 개인적으로 만족스런 방식에서 이들 선에 대한 의미 있는 해석을 할 수 있는 것을 말한다. 학생들에게 객관적 선을 소개하는 교육과 그들이 선을 의미 있게 해석하고 성취할 수 있도록 하는 기반으로서 이상의 교육이 중요함을 논의한다. 문화관련적 잘삶은 역사적으로 발전되어 온 문화적 배경 속에서 형성된 개인의 검증된 욕구가 충족됨을 말한다. 잘삶을 가능케 하는 선은 전적으로 개인이 선택한다기보다는 역사적으로 발전되어 온 문화적 배경을 공유하고 있는 ‘느슨한’ 집단에 속한 것이다. 잘삶에 대한 전문가는 없지만, 예술 비평가들이 비평을 통해 작품의 심미성을 이해하는데 도움을 주는 것처럼 선을 성취하고 경험한 사람들이 구성하는 ‘일반적인 내부자’ 집단에서 이루어지는 대화와 소통을 통해 잘삶의 권위는 확보된다. 이런 점에서 잘삶의 선은 주체관련적이면서도 탈 개인적이다. 학생들이 문화적 배경 속에서 검증된 욕구를 형성하도록 돕는 것은 그들의 잘삶을 증진시키기 위한 중요한 교육적 과업이다.

Abstract

This study is to explore the concept of well-being in the integral viewpoints and their implications of education. Until now, the well-being theory has been discussed with two theoretical tradition: Objective Theories; Subjective Theories. Both, however, have theoretical weaknesses. Doret de Ruyter, and John White try to make up for them. De Ruyter argues the concept of 'happy flourishing'. She believes that human well-being consists of two aspects: the fulfillment of generic goods that are objectively identifiable and the meaningful interpretation of these goods by the individual in a way that is personally satisfactory. For this conception, she uses the term of 'happy flourishing'. De Ruyter contends that educating children with ideals is important to motivate them to strive for something higher or better. White argues the issue of culture and authority in wellbeing theory. He argues that goods are not related to our particular desires. Goods lie to the outside of individuals. They are created largely within cultures. Authority on well-being does not belong to individuals, but to a 'loose' collection of people. They not only must have some experience of most of the major areas of worthwhile activity, but are also interested in reflecting on what makes a flourishing human life. It is important task of education to guide children to participate the conversation and communication with loose collection of people. They contribute to the integral interpretation of the concept of well-being. Their arguments have a lot of implications to the practices of education. They remind us that the promotion of personal well-being is a central aim of education.
