스토아 사상에 비추어 본 『에밀』재해석: 오이케이오시스를 중심으로

본 연구의 목표는 18세기 루소의 교육소설 『에밀』을 스토아 사상에 비추어 해석하는 것이다. 스토아사상은 헬레니즘 철학의 하나로서, 자연학, 논리학, 윤리학 세 분야로 구성되어 있다. 그중 자연학은 모든 사물의 자연적 본성을 탐구한다. 스토아 사상에 따르면, 우주는 자기 자신을 사랑하여 그 속성을 우주 내의 생물에게도 부여하였는데 그것이 바로 자기애 즉 오이케이오시스이다. 그런데 인간의 자기애는 성장함에 따라 그 대상과 방향이 달라지는데, 처음에는 자기 몸의 보존에서 시작하여 의식적 선택, 덕의 추구 순서로 자기에게 가치로운 것을 향한다. 즉 자기애 속에 덕의 추구를 포함한다. 그리하여 스토아사상에 비추어『에밀』을 분석해보면, 자연 속에는 육체적 자기보존과 도덕성이 포함되며, 두 가지는 상충함 없이 양립한다. 둘째, 『에밀』은 “스토아 사상의 오이케이오시스를 주제로 하는 ‘철학적 인간발달이론’을 적용한 교육서”라고 규정지을 수 있다. 셋째, ‘자연’, ‘자연을 따르는 교육’, ‘소극적 교육’, ‘성선설’의 핵심개념들을 보다 일관성 있게 해석할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to re-interpret Emile from the perspective of Stoicism. Stoicism is a Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in about 300 BCE. It consists of Stoic physics, ethics, and logic. Stoic physics deals with all the questions concerning the physical world, especially the nature of living beings. According to Stoic philosophers, the nature is a universal, divine being in which the Logos is embodied. So the nature rules all the existences with its providence as a rational actor. Also the nature loves itself and grants all the beings the attribute to love themselves. It is self-love, oikeiōsis in a Greek term. It is called ‘appropriation theory’ because one appropriates some objects as he/she perceives them as beneficial to his/her self-preservation. According to Stoicism, self-love always orients towards the valuable things to self-preservation. Humans pursue different objects and diverse values as they grow: Beginning from the preservation of their bodies, they proceed to conscious choices, then to the pursuit of virtue. In conclusion, I suggested three benefits when Emile is interpreted from the Stoic perspective. First, self-love includes the pursuits of virtue in addition to self-preservation of the body. Second, Emile can be defined as an educational novel in which Rousseau applies human developmental theory from the perspective of Stoicism. Third, the fundamental concepts in Emile can be more consistently interpreted when they are viewd from the Stoic perspective. Those are ‘the nature’, ‘education according to nature’, ‘negative education’ and ‘the goodness of human nature’.
