Abstract

Karl Popper developed his scientific method of knowledge based on discourses of the relationship between experience and knowledge. The scientific method of knowledge suggested by Popper indicates that scientific and unscientific knowledge can be clearly demarcated from one another without philosophical hypotheses on foundations, i.e. nonevidential standards for justifying beliefs. Popper finds that the ultimate foundations for the certainty and exactitude of knowledge do not exist. Knowledge originates from unreasonable speculation and a wild imagination. It gets its scientific status via critical-empirical tests in accordance with the regulative idea of truth. Theories are forms of knowledge with the scientific status. Popper applies the scientific method of knowledge to the realms of values and norms. As such, the philosophy of science can be understood as a design of the way of life in which the ideas of ethics and morality are entailed. The purpose of this study is to clarify the logical structures underlying the transformation of Popper’s philosophy of science to moral philosophy and to positively examine the implications of the logical structures on moral education at school. To do so, section 2 begins with an analytical discourse on critical test in Popper’s philosophy of science. To complement the subversive nature of critical test, the regulative idea of truth is presented as a guiding principle that can enable the sustainable development of scientific knowledge. In section 3, the possibility of applying critical test to values and norms is discussed based on the bridging principles that demand the consistency in theory and practice. From the perspective of the design of the way of life, ethics and morality are defined as sincere confrontations of mutually contradictory values rather than a blind obedience to substantial values justified by foundations. Finally, section 4 discusses how critical and rational attitude towards life, defined as ethics and morality, could be promoted through moral education at school. For the institutional control of hidden curriculum with tacit values and norms, fallibility, criticizability, and practicabiltity are put forward as three principles of moral education at school.
