Abstract

This study explores the confusion surrounding (creative) expression in school education during the age of artificial intelligence (AI) as an existential crisis and seeks to recover the educational significance of expression. It is guided by three research questions: (1) What is being lost in school education in the era of generative AI? (2) How can expression, beyond the externalization of the inner self, be understood as contributing to self-formation? (3) What principles of educational practice foster expressions(understood as existential expressions) that support self-formation? First, the article argues that the problems surrounding the use of generative AI extend beyond ethical and political concerns such as hallucination, plagiarism, and copyright, becoming educational issues at the existential level that obstruct the formation and transformation of students’ unique selves. Subsequently, it then regards these problems as related to the relationship between expression and the inner world, and, following the account of art philosopher Ananta Charan Sukla, understands expression not merely as the externalization of the inner self but as a mental activity that structures and organizes, a process of self-formation requiring the refinement of emotions, and simultaneously a process of forming both others and the world. As principles of educational practice for recovering the existential nature of expression, the article emphasizes the need to recognize that the process of articulation of subjectivity itself is a process of shaping the mind and influencing identity, and that students must be guided to sense that expressing what they feel to be true is more important than producing polished or adept expressions. Ultimately, it proposes that existential expressions-as contingent and unpredictable processes of self-formation, often overshadowed by smooth and systematic products-should be recovered as forms of educational life enacted within the classroom.
