Abstract

A large portion of what we know is derived from trusting the testimony of others. What does this imply for our understanding of “knowledge education”? Drawing from contemporary analyses on “testimony,” I track how testimonial exchanges within classroom contexts lead to successful student-side knowledge formation and investigate whether teaching knowledge is reducible to testifying knowledge. I argue and conclude as follows: First, the concept of testimony helps to clarify the epistemic exchange process in which teachers and students mutually understand another’s intentions and cooperate toward their realization. Second, successful teaching necessitates at least one additional kind of epistemic achievement that is not necessarily present in instances of successful testimonies; thus, I conclude that, in the context of instructional teaching and learning, teaching that p cannot be fully reduced to testifying that p. Lastly, the distinctive character of teaching-through-testimony can partially be explained by the epistemic values of epistemic autonomy and epistemic membership.
