Abstract

Amidst the growing social and educational consensus on the importance of empathy, it is often perceived as a personality trait or as something immediate in form. Discussions concerning empathy frequently remain at the level of an “identification” of feelings, and at times appear to intersect with the language of rights claims that demand empathy. However, such prevailing discourses and everyday usages surrounding empathy quickly tend to become obsolete in the face of matters where immediate empathy is impossible, thereby raising the need to deepen the inquiry into empathy and ethics. Building on this awareness of the problem, this paper reflects on how we might remember the pain and suffering of others―those that cannot be easily met with hasty empathy, yet cannot be simply turned away from. This entails exploring an ethical stance toward things that are difficult to understand, and even resists understanding―toward things that cannot take shared commonality as the basis for empathy. This paper attempts, via a reflection on “rationality,” to extend the discourse on empathy beyond subjectivity, toward the position of the other. Drawing on Derrida’s discussion of impossible mourning, it examines why one must arrive at the impossibility of empathy itself, and seeks to imagine an encounter with the other that takes place beyond “rationality” and “rational communication.” In this journey, Kim Sum’s Listening Time becomes a pathway for exploring a community that infinitely approaches the other―on the basis of an acknowledgment of impossibility―by listening to silence and reading between the lines.
