Abstract
Drawing on new materialist thought, this paper reconsiders educational practice by developing a different ontological language for education. New materialism, often described as part of an "ontological turn," emphasizes the contingency and emergence present in the more-than-human, material world. Based on this perspective, recent scholarship has shifted focusfrom the teacher’s intentions and educational aims to the experiences that students encounter and the learning that developswithin them. However, I argue that even within the materialist ontology these approaches reference, the practice of teaching by human teachers remains important. Re-situating teaching within this ontology also provides a way to interpret teaching that goes beyondtraditional, purpose-driven accounts. To support this argument, the paper examines the work of British anthropologist Tim Ingold, whose "ontology of lines" and account of correspondence have influenced new materialist discussions and educational theory. Ingold interprets existence and the world as ongoing processes of wayfaring along lines, highlighting specific aspects of our ontological condition. In an ontology whererelations are irreducible and entanglement and mutual interference are constitutive, knowing becomesa situated, skilled practice of attending and responding. Based on this perspective, the paper reconceives teaching as a practice of correspondence in which teacher and student participate in each other’s lives and experience transformation together. Teaching is understood not mainly as inheritance, incorporation, or simply inviting a new generation into acompleted order, but as a shared movement that creates a new beginning. It allows the teacher as elder and the student as younger to proceed together, respond to one another, and grow and age together within the educational relationship.
