Abstract
This study aims to explore a narrative appreciation pedagogy that enables readers to recognize themselves as relational beings and to grow into subjects who can act responsibly within a network of relations. Literary education should offer opportunities for students—who have become increasingly indifferent to relationality in contemporary society—to become aware of their interconnectedness with diverse beings and to engage in reflection. Accordingly, this study reconstructs the meaning and characteristics of infra-reflexivity, proposed in Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory (ANT), within the context of literary education, and presents a pedagogical framework for narrative appreciation that fosters the formation of relational subjectivity through the practice of infra-reflexivity. Infra-reflexivity refers to the process by which readers recognize themselves not as isolated individuals but as relational beings entangled with various human and non-human actants, exploring how their actions exert influence within those relational flows. Through this process, readers can grow into relational subjects who practice responsibility within the networks they inhabit. Based on the three characteristics of infra-reflexivity—“awareness of relational existence,” “formation of relational sensitivity,” and “responsive repositioning”—this study proposes three corresponding pedagogical approaches to narrative appreciation: (1) descending into entanglement, (2) perceiving relational effects, and (3) positioning oneself responsively.
