Abstract
Flexible work is a typical form of work-life balance and family friendly policy. Korean government is testing part-time work policy as a pilot program and plans to expand it to all departments in the government in October 2010. Flexible work arrangements are becoming important in Korea because the policies could create more jobs in the current economic situation. As a nascent research in this field in Korea, this study examines flexible work arrangements of the UK, USA, and Germany where have used it for approximately 30 years, and find implications from their practice. We, then, suggest five strategies to develop better flexible work policies in Korea. In this vein, first this study defines what flexible work arrangements are; second, it examines the policies in the UK, USA, and Germany and find five core factors (detailed guidelines, consistent management, advertisement for managers; constant evaluations and open results; and financial support); finally, it suggests how to apply these five factors to Korean government.
